The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), unveiled during the G20 Summit in Delhi in September 2023, is an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic integration between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
At the heart of IMEC lies India’s long-term national vision—Viksit Bharat 2047. This government initiative seeks to transform India into a fully developed nation by its 100th year of independence. IMEC is being positioned as a catalytic engine for this vision, not only through its potential to increase trade and employment, but by accelerating the development of critical infrastructure, digital innovation, and renewable energy adoption. By placing India at the crossroads of global supply chains, the corridor bolsters the country’s ambition to lead on the world stage in both economic and strategic terms.
IMEC is envisioned as a multi-modal corridor encompassing railways, ports, highways, energy networks, and digital infrastructure. It aims to facilitate trade, investment, and connectivity across the continents. Estimates suggest that IMEC could boost India’s GDP by up to 1.5% annually by 2030, increase trade volumes between India and the Gulf by 40% over the next decade, and generate up to 2 million jobs in India and the Gulf region.
Recent Developments and Collaborations
- In June 2025, Indian Minister Piyush Goyal met with Italian business leaders in Milan to discuss strengthening economic ties between India and Italy, with a particular focus on assessing the progress of IMEC and identifying new collaboration opportunities.
- Cyprus and Israel are working to rapidly establish an undersea electricity cable linking the two countries, aligning with IMEC’s broader goals of enhancing energy connectivity between Europe and the Middle East.
IMEC represents a transformative vision for global trade and connectivity, aligning with India’s long-term development goals and offering strategic advantages to participating nations. Its successful implementation could redefine economic landscapes across continents, fostering sustainable growth and regional stability.
